Forming an Opportunity Belief

My opportunity belief is that iPhone screens shatter too easily. (I chose iPhones specifically because I have an iPhone and I feel most iPhone users don't really want to make a switch over to another kind of phone, as they like the iPhone for the simplicity or other reasons. Also, some models of iPhones are glass on the back and the front)
The unmet need is an iPhone that doesn't shatter as easily or doesn't shatter at all. I think that all iPhone users have this need but specifically younger adults who are more careless with their phones. This need has always existed as these phones have always been easily shattered. To meet this need now people are purchasing expensive cases that are supposed to help prevent the problem, although it is not guaranteed. I am 95% sure that this opportunity exists.
The protypical customer would be an iPhone user and I think it would be people between the ages of 16-24, because they are going to be more careless with their phones as opposed to older adults who are more careful and also not on their phones as much.

I feel as if this did change my idea. I feel that there needs to be more options for phones, some people like cases and some people do not. However, they should be able to rely on their cases to protect their phones. I feel it is important to ask the customers because otherwise they might not be satisfied and their needs are what matter the most in the end. You might be losing out on sales by not taking in their opinions.

Identifying Local Opportunities

Five Local Opportunities in the "Tallahassee Democrat"
  • Business leaving 'expensive' city, heading to Quincy
  • http://www.tallahassee.com/story/money/2016/05/06/longtime-business-relocates-due-quincys-favorable-business-climate/83990526/
  • The business Capital Hydraulics has been located in Tallahassee for over 50 years and has found it is time to relocate to Quincy. Tallahassee is costly to run a business in as they add extra fees to the already expensive rent. They have been able to find a location with almost twice the space for a third of what they are paying right now.
  • The problem is that Tallahassee is expensive for small businesses to operate in.
  • Capital Hydraulics has the problem, however, this could potentially be a problem for Tallahassee too.

  • City terminates Clyde's and Costello's right to use sidewalk
  • http://www.tallahassee.com/story/money/2016/05/13/city-terminates-right--way-agreement-clydes-costellos/84349526/
  • There have been countless times that the city has had to give warnings to Clyde's and Costello's downtown becauase there are people lined up outside blocking the sidewalk. There have been complaints because of trash, vomit, and too many people. The city has finally decided to take away their right to use the outside patio.
  • The problem is that Clyde's gets very busy on the weekends and this space is important to their businsess and ensuring they have enough space for their customers. Without this space, they may have no choice but to shut down.
  • Clyde's and Costello's has the problem that has been presented.

  • 101 and done: Restaurant abruptly closes today
  • http://www.tallahassee.com/story/money/2016/05/11/101-and-done-restaurant-abruptly-closed-today/84234640/
  • 101 restaurant in Tallahassee has closed without any notice to the employees or to the public. The owner says it is because of declining revenue and also they are in need of renovations. The restaurant has been open for 7 years and the inside was becoming outdated, also more recently their have been more upscale nightlife venues added to Tallahassee, making for some tough competition.
  • The problem is that 101 has closed abruptly because of declining revenue leaving at least 100 employees without jobs.
  • The owners of 101 and also the employees have the problem.

  • Killearn Antiques closing, opening under new name
  • http://www.tallahassee.com/story/money/2016/05/18/killearn-antiques-closing-opening-under-new-name/84546626/
  • Market Square is preparing to undergo a complete renovation in the near future. However, these businesses specifically the Killearn Antiques were unsure of when and how it was going to be handled. They took the chance and relocated near a Carrabba's Italian Grill where they have renamed themselves to Canopy Roads Antiques and have undergone a transformation.
  • The problem presented in the story does not necessarily pertain to the antique store because they relocated. However, there is a problem for the rest of Market Square that are left with this uncertainty of what is to become of Market Square in this redevelopment.
  • Killearn Antiques and the rest of Market Square had the problem, however, Killearn Antiques found a solution and are no longer in the hole waiting for some answers. The rest of Market Square is still facing this problem.

  • Morningstar Watch List: Northwood Centre Loan in Danger
  • http://www.tallahassee.com/story/money/2016/05/12/morningstar-watch-list-northwood-centre-loan-danger/84279264/
  • Northwood Centre has issues with the building including 10 pounds of "bat guano". The conditions are not safe and neither is the air in these buildings. The loan that is in place for the building could be at a loss of up to 20 million dollars. These businesses such as Anytime Fitness, El Jalisco's and more are concerned for what happens next as their revenue has started to plunge and about 1500 state workers are withdrawing.
  • The problem is that the loan is at a huge loss, these businesses are located in unsafe buildings with bad conditions.
  • The owners of Northwood Centre and the owners of these businesses have the problem as well as the loan company.

My Bug List

1.) It bugs me when the Dunkin Donuts on Archer Road does not pay attention to my order and they give me the wrong size coffee so I have to go inside to switch it out.
This bug exists because they are in a hurry to get people through the drive-thru and do not pay close attention to what the order is.
2.) It bugs me when the Cox Internet stops working because of something on their end and not on mine.
This bug exists because they need to provide better internet services.
3.) It bugs me when I need to return something to Walmart and the line at Customer Service is so long its wrapped around the area.
This bug exists because they usually have one person working customer service.
4.) It bugs me when I go out to eat at Red Robin and my waiter is slow and also in a bad mood.
This bug exists because people come to work in a bad mood and take it out on the customer instead of remembering that we are the reason they have a job.
5.) It bugs me when I order a steak at Outback and they did not cook it medium and cooked it well done instead, so I have to send it back to the cooks to remake it and then it takes 20 minutes to get a new one.
This bug exists because the cooks are not paying attention to the steak that is on the grill and are overcooking it, then they have to cook a whole new steak which takes time.
6.) It bugs me when I buy a brand new iPhone charging cable and it breaks within a few days causing me to purchase another one.
This bug exists because they make these cords out of cheap material that breaks easily so that we are forced to keep buying new ones.
7.) It bugs me when I drop my iPhone and the screen shatters even though I had a case on it.
This bug exists because they make the iPhone screens out of glass and it easily breaks so that you have to replace the screen.
8.) It bugs me when the straps on my thin-strapped dresses break after I wash them in the washer machine.
This bug exists because the material is cheap and also the washer machine is too harsh on my clothes.
9.) It bugs me when I try to go to look at cars that I might want to buy and the salesperson is being too aggressive trying to sell me this car.
This bug exists because they are trained to sell cars, however, because they really want to sell a car they don't always realize they could be scaring potential customers away by coming on too strong.
10.) It bugs me when I order clothes online in my size and when I receive them in the mail they are not the same measurements as shown online and they do not fit me.
This bug exists because they did not measure the actual clothing item and did not bother to advertise correctly.
11.) It bugs me when I read an instruction manual for putting together a bookshelf and it's more confusing than me just trying to put it together myself.
This bug exists because they try to find a system of instructions that is simple, however, they do not ensure that it is the most simple and efficient way for the majority of consumers.
12.) It bugs me when I buy a brand new camera and I'm really excited to use it, however, batteries are not included so I have to go purchase batteries before I am able to use it.
This bug exists because they do not include batteries with these items and instead make it a bigger hassle for the consumer so they have to purchase them separately.
13.) It bugs me when I try to buy a used video game at a discounted price but the disc is so scratched that it will never work properly.
This bug exists because of the negligence of the workers in buying used video games that are fully functioning.
14.) It bugs me when I buy a used textbook for my classes that has been highlighted and written in which distracts me while I am reading,
This bug exists because these textbooks companies allow students to write in and highlight their textbooks without thinking about the students that might use the textbook after.
15.) It bugs me when I purchase a bottle of Krazy super glue and it all comes out when I open it.
This bug exists because the glue is very thin and the bottle is not designed for the liquid, if you squeeze it at all the glue comes pouring out.
16.) It bugs me when I run out of conditioner before I run out of shampoo.
This bug exists because they put the same amount of both in each bottle, however, you don't need as much shampoo as you do conditioner.
17.) It bugs me when I order a salad at the Chipotle on University Avenue and the lettuce they use is wilted and turning brown.
This bug exists because they are serving lettuce that has gone bad and needs to be thrown out instead of opening a nice new bag of lettuce.
18.) It bugs me when the chips at Chipotle on University Avenue are stale and taste bad.
This bug exists because the chips are not cooked right or they have been sitting out too long and have gone bad from not being properly sealed.
19.) It bugs me when I am shopping at Walmart and I am unable to reach food on the very top shelf, however, there are no employees around to assist me in reaching it.
This bug exists because Walmart is usually understaffed or their employees are not where they are supposed to be.
20.) It bugs me when I purchase a size small t-shirt and after I dry the shirt it does not fit me anymore.
This bug exists because shirts are not pre-shrunk and instead the cotton shrinks after being dried, sometimes causing your clothes not to fit anymore.

Completing my Bug List was fairly challenging because even though these problems do exist, they are not problems I am constantly thinking about. However, once I started thinking of a few I feel as if it did become easier to list the rest. Thinking of a few lead me to thinking of more products or services that bug me. I also think it was somewhat challenging because I feel as if I am being a picky customer and identifying every little thing wrong with these products and services that I purchase instead of being happy because of what they provide me with. It's crazy to me that although these things bug me I have not really done much to address these problems and instead I deal with them each time I am presented with the problem.

My Entrepreneurship Story

I have been introduced to entrepreneurship by my dad because he has recently been trying to start a business. He has decided that he wants to flip houses for a living. In order to do this he needs to find a private investor to loan him money so that he can start purchasing houses. He named the business "Fire line Properties" and got the license to make it an official business. It is inspiring to see my dad interested in something and to then follow through to try to make it happen. He works on houses for a college housing company currently and he wants to change course to be his own boss doing something he really enjoys.

I enrolled in ENT3003, first and foremost, because I need business electives in order to graduate. However, I have heard a lot of great things about this class. I have heard that it is very inspiring, that you learn a lot, and most importantly that it is an enjoyable class. Entrepreneurship is a side of business that I do not know much about and I am eager to learn more about it, because even if I am currently pursuing a different field in business there is always the possibility of me wanting to start my own business one day. I used to think of an entrepreneur as someone who sells products for a living, thinking back to an episode of SpongeBob where the guy sells chocolate. However, it's so much more to that and I hope that from this class I learn about what it means to be an entrepreneur and also how to be a successful one.
